► Description of The project, Krakow


The research zone is limited to the southern Poland, which is compound of, both in geographical and historical meaning, regions- Śląsk /Western part/ and Małopolska /Eastern part. Śląsk and Małopolska, they are also cultural regions, where can be found monuments of wooden architecture: religious buildings, Catholic, Greco-catholic and Orthodox ones.
Characteristics of a material used for building objects, tractable to fire, corrosions mechanical, biological and chemical ones, caused destruction and currently there are only 700 of that kind of wooden objects left. For instance,in the 17th century, there were 500 religious objects in the Śląsk Region, currently there are only 130 left.
Currently, regions: Małopolska and Śląsk are devided into 7 vojevodaship districts: Dolnośląskie, Opolskie, Śląskie, Małopolskie, Świętokrzyskie, Podkarpackie i Lubelskie.
In Małopolska vojevodaship there is a wooden architecture route, more than 1500km long, with 123 churches and 39 Orthodox ones. Among them there are objects from the World Heritage List: Sękowa, Binarowa, Lipnica Murowana and Dębnio Podhalańskim.
In Polish Carpatians there are 240 wooden objects in the regions: Lubelszczyzna and Ziemia Zamojskia other 50.
Due to the latest report, made by National Department for Research and Monument Documentation, 62% of objects is in good condition but the rest require a rapid intervention and repair. There are still some objects which are almost ruined.
